Leadership Skills - Who is an Effective Manager?

Updated: Feb 17

Let me answer this question by sharing an oft repeated but powerful story:

A man was talking an early morning walk on the beach. At a distance he noticed a young boy frantically picking up things from the sand and throwing them into the sea. Intrigued by the boy's frantic actions, the man went closer and saw that the young boy was picking up starfishes from the sand and throwing them into the sea.

"What are you doing", the man inquired. "I am trying to save the lives of these starfishes by putting them back into the water," replied the boy. "The sun will be up soon and if they don't go back into the water, they'll die of the heat."

The man looked around and saw thousands and thousands of starfishes lying all over the beach. Then he looked up and saw that the sun was about to rise.

"It's no use," the man aid to the boy. "There are far too many of them and the sun's going to be up soon. You won't be able to save them all. You can't make a difference."

The boy ignored the man, picked up another starfish and threw it into the water, then turned to the man and said, "I made a difference to that one."

And that my friends, is an Effective Manager. Someone who makes a difference. A positive difference to each and every one of his team members through knowledge sharing, coaching, guiding and mentoring.
